This course provides an introduction to the effects that various types of dementia have on the brain and the resulting symptoms. It outlines the basic steps of diagnosis and discusses ongoing research. Dementia is not a single disease; instead, it is a term that describes a significant loss of mental ability due to various underlying disorders. It impacts intellectual capabilities, impairing vocabulary, judgment, reasoning, physical coordination, and math skills, which can disrupt daily life.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Define dementia and explain the observable effects.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the brain's major parts and functions.
  • Describe the most common symptoms of dementia.
  • Explain the diagnostic process and identify warning signs indicating a person should seek an evaluation.
  • Describe the different types of dementia, their causes, the areas of the brain they affect, and the resulting symptoms.
  • Discuss ongoing research into the etiology (genetics) of dementia and explore alternative therapies, such as music therapy.
