Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a condition in which bones become thin, brittle, and weak. Fragile bones fracture (break) easily, especially those in the hip, spine, and wrist. Injuries due to osteoporosis are among the most common and dangerous that can happen to an older adult.

Given the number of residents affected by osteoporosis, facility administrators and staff should be aware of how best to help those with this disease, and how to help others avoid it.

Objectives

By the end of this course, users will be able to:

  • Understand the anatomy and physiology of healthy bones and changes resulting in osteopenia and osteoporosis
  • Identify changes in bones and joints associated with aging
  • Explain what osteopenia and osteoporosis are, and how each affects residents’ overall health and function
  • List the signs and symptoms of osteopenia and osteoporosis
  • Identify specific strategies for the prevention, treatment, and management of osteoporosis
