Diabetes

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a chronic disease that results in too much glucose, a form of sugar, in the bloodstream. DM negatively impacts multiple body systems. There are Type I Diabetes, Type II Diabetes, and a newer reference to pre-diabetes or borderline diabetes. 
The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of diabetes mellitus, its types and causes, clinical criteria for diagnosis, and treatment options, as well as screening and prevention guidelines to enhance the affected resident’s clinical outcomes and as result, their quality of life

Objectives

By the end of this course, users will be able to:

  • Understand the significance of statistical data presented regarding diabetes.
  • Identify the types of diabetes mellitus, their causes, and their effects on the body
  • Discuss risk factors, complications, treatments, and management of diabetes. 
  • Identify some special considerations in working with diabetic children, disabled, and elderly individuals.
