Description

Caring for a person with dementia can be a complex, trying, and, at times, heartbreaking task. The care needs of a person suffering from dementia become greater and more intimate as they are slowly robbed of their faculties. This course gives dementia caregiver tools to navigate day-to-day care needs, monitor for common health concerns, and keep them engaged, independent and safe, while preserving their dignity and individuality.

Objectives

By the end of this course, participants will:

  • List the primary symptoms of dementia
  • Describe two common approaches to dementia care
  • Assist residents with dementia care with ADLs including ambulation, moving and transferring, bathing and grooming, dressing, toileting, continence care, and eating and hydration
  • Monitor for, recognize, treat, and prevent common health issues
  • Engage residents with dementia in meaningful structured and unstructured activities
  • Ensure that their facility is a safe environment, that has caring, well-trained staff, that maintains compliance with dementia-specific regulations, and is prepared to care for the unique needs of their residents with dementia during an emergency or disaster
  • Create a daily care plan with the goal of protecting the resident's independence, dignity and individuality

Certificate
